TRAVEL
Friday Harbor is located on San Juan Island, the second-largest and most populous of the San Juan Islands in northwestern Washington.
There are many options to get there, but it will require planning ahead.
Most people start by flying into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). From there, no matter which method you choose, you will get a lovely scenic view of the Pacific Northwest from air, water or by land.
In addition to SeaTac, you might find domestic flights arriving at Paine Field (PAE) north of Seattle in Everett. It is closer to the ferry terminal, an easier/smaller airport to navigate through, and car rental is available.
Although it is an option, we do not recommend flying into Vancouver International Airport (YVR). While distance to Friday Harbor is similar to that from SeaTac, border wait time is unpredictable and you might just miss that ferry ride!
Finally, to enjoy the beautiful San Juan Island and to avoid any last minute travel delays, we recommend arriving on or before Tuesday, July 26th.
We very much appreciate your time and effort in getting to Friday Harbor in celebration of our wedding!
washington state ferrY
Ferries to Friday Harbor depart from Anacortes Ferry Terminal, which is 2.5 hour drive from SeaTac. You can either park at the terminal and walk on, or drive on with your vehicle. It is critical that you make a ferry reservation for both your arrival and departure trips if driving on!
Reservations are released in three different waves: 30% two months prior to the summer sailing season, 30% two weeks prior and 30% two days prior to the specific sailing date at 7am Pacific Time. The remaining 10% are saved for standby vehicles but those go quickly and it is best not to depend on them.
It costs nothing to make a reservation, but take note of a $19 no show fee. You can cancel reservation up until 5pm the day prior. Meanwhile, round trip fare ($70 per vehicle + $15 per additional passenger) is collected at the terminal.
Finally, it is highly encouraged that you arrive at the terminal at least 45-60 minutes prior to your reserved sailing time. Vehicles that do not check in at the tollbooth 30 minutes ahead will lose their reserved space and travel standby.
REGIONAL FLIGHT
Spend your time being there, not getting there - this would be the fastest and coolest option of them all!
If you are coming into SeaTac, explore Kenmore Air which offers service from Boeing Field or from Lake Union (for a seaplane flight). Meanwhile, San Juan Airlines departs right across from Paine Field.
One-way passenger ticket ranges $140-170, and there are charter flight options for groups of 3 or more.
AIRPORT SHUTTLE
This convenient round trip shuttle service for $85 will take you directly from SeaTac to Anacortes Ferry Terminal, from which you can effortlessly walk onto the ferry departing for Friday Harbor.
There are limited shuttles per day, so make sure you view the schedule and make a reservation in advance.
getting around the island
A car is not necessary on the island but do not rely on rideshare services such as Uber, since those are not available here! Try these options instead:
Accommodations
Our wedding venue, Saltwater Farm, is located a mile outside of Friday Harbor, which is the main town on the island right next to the ferry landing. Hence, staying at Friday Harbor is a convenient option. The following list of lodging recommendation is non-exhaustive, feel free to do your own research or ask us if you have any questions.
And while we are still living in an unprecedented/unpredictable time with the pandemic, we courage you to reserve lodging for the weekend sooner rather than later, as there are only limited number of hotels and inns on the island, and it is a popular vacation spot for Washingtonians during the summer season.
